3 Reasons Your Mattress May Be Causing Your Back Pain

Are you one of the lucky few to have never experienced back pain? Or are you one of the almost 31 million Americans who experience low back pain at any given time?

The American Chiropractic Association gives us these quick facts about back pain:

  • Worldwide, back pain is the single leading cause of disability, preventing many people from engaging in work as well as other everyday activities.
  • Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work.
  • Back pain accounts for more than 264 million lost work days in one year  — that’s two work days for every full-time worker in the country.
  • Experts estimate that up to 80 percent of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.
  • Back pain can affect people of all ages, from adolescents to the elderly.
  • Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic — meaning they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.
  • Most people with low back pain recover, but recurrence is common and for small percentage of people the condition will become chronic and disabling.

Did you know that there are 3 ways to tell that your mattress might be the cause of your back pain?

  1. Age/condition of your mattress

It's recommended that you change your mattress every 5-7 years, not necessarily because your mattress is no longer in good shape, but because your sleep habits change. You get older, maybe have an injury, gain or lose weight, etc. All these things affect how we sleep and how well our mattress works for us. In other cases, the mattress you've been sleeping on may now have a body impression in it, leave you unable to move in it, or be unresponsive to you. All these things are indicative of you needing to go shopping for a new mattress.

  1. Tossing and Turning

If you can't get comfortable and are constantly changing position throughout the night, your mattress isn't doing its job.

     3. Waking Up With Back Pain

If you wake in the morning with back pain, but the pain goes away as the day goes on, it's likely your mattress. When your mattress isn't giving your back and spine the support it needs throughout the night, your body is forced to compensate, putting stress on your muscles, joints, and discs, leaving you sore and tired.
